FISSURES

IPhone digital images. 2024

Nos 6 & 7 were printed and presented at  'WHERE THE LINE BREAKS', Newlyn Society of Artists show, curated by poet Katrina Naomi at Tremenheere Gallery, Cornwall.

Selected from a large series of photos taken with my iPhone, while on my daily walk with my dog Ru on the dunes, near my home in Gwithian, on the north coast of Cornwall.

I have a longstanding interest in how photographic images mediate our connection with the worlds around us, and have explored this question through experimenting with diverse approaches – from using primitive hand-made pin hole cameras to downloading images from surveillance cameras.

At this time, when, aided and abetted by technological advances, we are swamped by images, I feel, more than ever, it is important to consider how these are produced, and what they purport to be saying.

The two ‘Fissure’ images were captured using the panoramic function on my iPhone.

Disobeying the cameras commands, I more or less danced while taking the shots. The resulting glitches confess where the iPhone struggled to process and stitch the data to produce a cohesive panorama. Horizon lines are split, beaches fractured, blue skies shattered.
